On November 19, the plenary session of the XIII St. Petersburg international innovation forum was held under the title " Tandem of industry and healthcare. Conclusions and forecasts».
The hybrid plenary session was moderated by Roman Gerasimov, a journalist and TV presenter: «this year we passed a real stress test, where the main thing is the importance of medicine, health and doctors. The city is still based on industry, education and science, which cannot be stopped. That is why I propose to discuss this key Alliance.»
Alexander Beglov, Governor of Saint Petersburg, delivered a welcome speech to all the participants in an online format: «Saint Petersburg has always been a leader in innovation. Today, the city’s enterprises use the development and resources of the military-industrial complex for the production of medical equipment. Several such projects are already being implemented.»
The Governor emphasized the important figures for our city, noting that more than 70 pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers of medicines work in St. Petersburg. The volume of drug production increases by 10–15% annually. The volume of products shipped exceeds 35 billion rubles a year.
The Governor also said that about 100 St. Petersburg companies produce medical devices and equipment. Their sales reach 15.5 billion rubles. The products are delivered to 102 countries around the world.
Mikhail Lobin, first Vice-President of the Union of Industrialists and entrepreneurs of Saint Petersburg, also noted the relevance of the chosen issue: «Today’s topic is not easy to choose: we have a specific challenge that we are fighting. The St. Petersburg industry has something to share during these events. There are problems that need to be discussed and solutions found.»
Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the management Board of RUSNANO management company, gave an assessment of how domestic production responds to the virus threat. He shared information about the projects that the Corporation has launched, and gave a short excursion into the history of Russian pharmaceuticals.
«Russia inherited strong science and weak industry from the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, it is not the Soviet Union was a leader in the pharmaceutical industry, the majority of the drugs we were getting on imports. This became apparent in the late 90’s. The vector that has changed a lot is the Pharma-2020 project, " Anatoly Borisovich explained.
The expert paid attention to the implementation of RUSNANO projects: «at the early stage of the pandemic, there was a problem with testing. One of our portfolio companies, Testgen, was at the final stage of completing a set of chemical reagents for testing. The main argument in favor of this test is accuracy, the parameters are much higher than others. Another example is a system for measuring hemostasis for those who have problems with blood clotting. We conducted clinical trials that proved that the Ministry of health made the right decision about the need for anticoagulant therapy. Our device allows you to quickly make a measurement. The third example: we funded an American company that develops a drug, not a vaccine.»
Vladimir Knyaginin, Vice-Governor of Saint Petersburg, highlighted the key trends in the current situation: «The block that we should lead is the centers of artificial intelligence. There are 43 universities and 300 research institutes in St. Petersburg. Consolidation is underway in many sectors, and we must create artificial intelligence research centers in order to agglomerate the existing structures and establish deep cooperation between science and industry. And, of course, to prevent the „ice age“ in the frames. I repeat, it is important that our universities gain a foothold in economic leadership.»
Andrey rudskoy, rector of Peter the Great Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University, dedicated his speech to combining efforts that led to practical results and developments.
«A cluster of translational medicine was created together with the Almazov research center. We joined these challenges in the summer of 2020, winning a tough competition and gaining the status of a world-class scientific center. We are especially happy to cooperate with medical centers and other world-class research centers. we are currently developing a roadmap for areas where we can combine our efforts. This is a joint activity and research of digital platforms in the development of vaccines against viruses, biomodeling of diseases and a number of other promising areas, including the introduction of a «smart clinic», — assured rudskoy.
Polytech developed a mathematical model for the development of pandemic events and calculated several possible curves for the spread of cases. As expected, from the end of autumn and early winter, do not forget about COVID-19.
Dmitry Morozov, General Director of JSC «Biocad», raised the issue of the complexity of pharmaceuticals in terms of regulating the processes of launching a vaccine: «Pharmaceuticals cannot live in a vacuum, or rely on applied medicine. We have four vaccine projects, but we are focused on Sputnik V, and time has decided a lot. In fact, the only problem is a long way to launch, in order to pass all the necessary stages in a short time. From December, we will increase production and reach a million doses. This vaccine works, obviously. When we put it on track, it will make a significant contribution to the fight against coronavirus.»
Evgeny Shlyakhto, General Director of the Almazov National medical research center of the Russian Ministry of health, spoke about the potential of medical centers, the creation of breakthrough technologies, and, in particular, about «smart clinics».
«Today it is absolutely clear that healthcare is developing in such a way that it is impossible to do without integration of the translation part. COVID-19 was an indicator of institutions ' willingness to innovate. We are faced with the task of transferring the patient to the outpatient stage, and without telemedicine it is impossible to do this, so the issues of patient monitoring, signal reception, data processing and telemedicine consultation are acute, otherwise there will be huge problems with queues. We need to take the overload off the hospitals. We are doing a lot in relation to the «smart chamber» and personalized medicine, since everyone has the right to world-class medicine, " the head of the center Almazova assured.
Presented «smart house» and «smart clinic» Ivan Ozhigin, Deputy General Director of the shvabe Holding. He noted that the Almazov center already has two pilot wards: «One of the national projects is digital healthcare, and it was this project that launched the development of the program. The existing telemedicine capabilities have made it possible to involve staff in this problem, and this is quite a feasible task.»
Alexander Lopota, Director-chief designer of the Central research and development Institute of robotics and technical Cybernetics, opened the topic of inventions in the field of healthcare: «We have been involved in medical projects for more than 10 years. since spring, we have made UV floodgates that are effective in the bactericidal spectrum. We also launched a mobile device called „ultraviolet flashlight“, which disinfects any objects, reducing the pathogenic part. Our main problem is the licensing procedures for launching products.»
Vladislav Balsky, administrative Director of the translational medicine Cluster, stated the main task of the company: «this is, of course, to ensure the accelerated translation of scientific ideas into specific applications, using the full potential of the cluster participants, first of all, breakthrough solutions in the development of vaccines, „smart clinics“, the creation of which is possible within the framework of international cooperation.»
